When you get into network marketing, you MUST get out a note book
or large piece of paper and figure out who your customer is!
Here are the 3 must knows:
1. Who is your ideal customer?
2. What do they want more than anything else?
3. Why do they want what they want?
It is so important for you to REALLY understand your customer.
Without this knowledge, you will not know where or how to market to them.
A good exercise to do is to draw out your customer….
Are they male or female?
What age are they?
Do they have children?
Are they into health?
What is most important to them?
What kind of home do they live in?
What kind of car do they drive?
What kind of job do they do?
What are their struggles?
You get the idea…really dig in deep to find the person you are looking for.
Sometimes we want to market to everyone, and that will be frustrating to you.
You may have a product or service that anyone can use…but I promise you, you
can and should market to your customer, not to the world.
Once you figure out who your ideal customer is, now you will be ready to figure
out how you will market to them.

OMG… this step is so overlooked and/or misunderstood!
I know when I got into the industry in 2002, I was told EVERYONE was my prospect.
Boy was that information FAR FROM THE TRUTH!
These are great questions that will help people to identify who their market is and they will also help them when they begin their marketing efforts!

Yes Shelly it is overlooked and misunderstood.
Too many think that their product is for everyone, and that
just is not the case!
Hi Alice,
Excellent questions to write down and fine tune who exactly your “prospect” is. I’ve gone so far as to create a little avatar I named her, dressed her, wrote all the things she needed to know about. Just like your list, it is so important.
When we can define who we are trying to connect with the battle is half over. Thanks for this awesome post.

Hi Alice
You have a great point here… we can market to the world
and drive our self to the wall or we can market to our
real customers and jump over the world of joy.

Hi Alice,
I agree to a point. It depends on whether you are marketing online or offline. My product is needed by everyone offline and in my community I am marketing to a wide audience with great results but I would never market that way online. And I have been recently narrowing my online marketing avatar as I test running adverts for my presentations. It is interesting to see the results and it sure has narrowed down my options. This is why you must split test your results, it brings surprising answers about your ideal person. I don’t think it is easy to determine who you should market to until you run test marketing campaigns and analyse, analyse, analyse.

Hello Clare,
Sometimes we FEEL that our product is needed by everyone…and maybe it is, but we have
to know our customer because everyone will not buy even if they need it:)
Have a great week Clare
It’s an interesting post Alice. My mentor also recommended me to make such an exercise to get a better picture about my potential customers. I think it’s something most marketers always postpone.

Yes it is a great way to make us really dig in and find out who are REAL
customer is:)
Great template here Alice. Knowing your customer is the first step before doing any type of marketing, especially marketing online, and so many people get it wrong. Or don’t do this step at all. Now they have a template to help get it done.

Hi Alice – This is a good exercise to take on…Writing this on paper brings life to the words. Some good ideas and questions here to get a better portrait of who are customer is and what we can do to better focus on them. I will be writing this down today and answering on paper.
